VICTORY (1981)
It's really too bad that history is full of nations fighting against one another and there always seems to be a good guy and a bad guy in each war! "Victory" was a perfect example of who the good guy was during WWII. However, "Victory" writer's brilliantly showed that even the bad guys have someone on their side who sees things a little different than their evil leaders. Enter German Major Karl Von Steiner, played by Max von Sydow who shows passion for the game of football (soccer) and those who play the game, regardless of which side of the line they stood during the war. Steiner (Von Sydow) respectful relationship with POW English Capt. John Colby ( Michael Caine) reminds us that there's hope for all nations with his willingness to treat people like humans, regardless of being a part of the worst war in the history of the world.
Colby (Caine) who shows years of playing knowledge is tasked by the Allied Commanders to lead and compete against the Germans and recruit a team made up of a few rag tag local POW's and nearby Stalag prisoners (former players) who are now so malnourished to play against the German National Team.
The POW legitimate chance of winning would be on the shoulders of their dominate player Cpl. Luis Fernandez (Pele) and the planned returned escape' goalkeeper U.S. Captain Robert Hatch ( Sylvester Stallone). Colby (Caine) and Hatch (Stalone) is informed that the game is just a plot for the Allies to have all players escape during half-time.......... but now it's game time.
The German propaganda game to destroy the Allies is set inside the perfect looking French stadium which the Germans now occupy. You can't help to be taken back in time with wooden seats, old loud speakers and vintage score clock. The pitch guarded by Nazi soldiers at attention along side ferocious German Shepard's to control the crowd. The German's referee and play-by-play broadcaster controlled the action in front of the French home crowd (who hate the Germans). The game was well played and it was obvious that the German team was not going to loose this game based on the actions of the referee. Even the German officers who know the game were embarrassed by some of the calls made by the referee.
Half-time arrives, the Allies report to their locker room and a decision has to be made: 1) Escape through the tunnel that was dug out (by the local Resistance) that leads out of the locker room or 2) Return to the game and command respect on the field of play and catapult the Allies to victory. So what happens now? Do they win? Do they escape? It's a surprise ending!
The MVP's in this movie was Bill Conti and his orchestra for one of most timely and dramatic music scores in any sports movie. The runner-up MVP were the writers - I love surprising endings!
